Lactate measurement: arterial versus venous blood sampling

چکیده

Lactate is the end product of the metabolic process of glucose utilization, known as anaerobic glycolysis, which occurs in the cytoplasm of all cells. In well-oxygenated tissues this lactate is metabolized further, but if tissues are inadequately oxygenated, lactate accumulates locally and blood concentration increases. As a blood marker of tissue hypoxia, lactate measurement has long-established clinical utility, most notably in the assessment and monitoring of acutely/critically ill patients and major trauma victims in emergency room and intensive care units. Arterial blood is the gold standard sample for lactate measurement, but a reading of the literature and current practice suggests that venous blood is considered an acceptable alternative.

Effect of delayed sampling on umbilical cord arterial and venous lactate and blood gases in clamped and unclamped vessels.

BACKGROUND Cord blood lactate at birth is a marker of antenatal hypoxia, and is comparable to pH as a prognostic tool. OBJECTIVE To determine, by a prospective observational study, the effect of delayed sampling from arteries and veins that were double clamped to isolate the blood from the placenta (clamped), and from vessels that were not isolated from the placenta (unclamped). METHODS Pai...

Mismatch of arterial and central venous blood gas analysis during haemorrhage.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Arterial base excess and lactate levels are key parameters in the assessment of critically ill patients. The use of venous blood gas analysis may be of clinical interest when no arterial blood is available initially. METHODS Twenty-four pigs underwent progressive normovolaemic haemodilution and subsequent progressive haemorrhage until the death of the animal. Base exc...

Blood lactate as a predictor for in-hospital mortality in patients admitted acutely to hospital: a systematic review

BACKGROUND Using blood lactate monitoring for risk assessment in the critically ill patient remains controversial. Some of the discrepancy is due to uncertainty regarding the appropriate reference interval, and whether to perform a single lactate measurement as a screening method at admission to the hospital, or serial lactate measurements. Furthermore there is no consensus whether the sample s...

Use of femoral vein catheters for the assessment of perfusion parameters

The use of central venous oxygen saturation (SvcO2) and arterial lactate in the diagnosis of severe tissue hypoperfusion is well established, and the optimization of these parameters is currently under investigation, particularly in patients with severe sepsis/septic shock. However, the only place for deep venous puncture or the first choice for puncture is often the femoral vein. Although veno...

Correlation between some arterial and venous blood gas parameters in healthy newborn Martina Franca donkey foals from birth to 96 hours of age.

In neonatology, blood gas analysis is a useful tool in the evaluation of the health of newborns and plays a key role in early detection of critically ill subjects. Because blood gas analysis parameters have not previously been studied in any depth in donkey foals, this study was performed on 16 healthy Martina Franca donkey foals born after an uncomplicated delivery. Arterial and venous blood s...
